More details at the bottom of this email!
If you live in the Northern hemisphere, it's summer right now. And that likely means some changes to your everyday routines.
You might be:
- Taking a week or two's holiday (vacation)
- Caring for kids or grandkids during their school's summer break
- Visiting family, or having guests stay with you
All of these things can be lots of fun ... but they can also be quite disruptive to your writing time.
So how do you keep writing during the summer?
First, you don't have to write at all if you don't want to. It's fine to
take August (or longer) off from writing completely, if that suits you best.
But assuming you do want to stay at least a little bit in touch with your writing, here are three things that may help.
#1: Consider Switching Your Writing Focus
If you're drafting a novel, the summer might be so busy that it's hard to get many words down on the page ... but perhaps this is a great time to take a step back, re-read what you've written so far, and work on an outline for the rest of the draft.
Or, you might decide to have a complete break
from your novel and work on something shorter: poetry or short stories, for instance.
#2: Create Extra "Scaffolding" Around Your Writing
Whether you're sticking with a big project or working on something short, one problem that a lot of writers face during the summer
is that their time is more interrupted or truncated than usual.
Even if you don't normally do much planning, you might find it helps a lot to have a "scaffold" for your writing: a list of bullet points roughly outlining your next scene, for instance. That way, even if you only have 10 minutes, you can make some progress in tackling the next little bit.
#3: Write as Early in the Day as Possible
I often think I'll find time in the late afternoon or evening to write, only for tasks to take longer than expected or for other things to get in the way. (Just a few examples from last week: the kids wanting a water balloon fight; my daughter's baking
taking longer than expected; the England-Spain Euros final going into extra time then penalties... though it was worth it for the result!)
Perhaps your days go a bit like that too. The only good solution I've found is to write as early in the day as possible. That way, even when other things inevitably overrun, at least you'll have done some writing.
